Mother Siluana Vlad: Forgiveness is the highest form of love
What is forgiveness? It is God’s mercy flowing into me, which I then give to my neighbor, or to the one who hurt me, or to myself. And we say: “Lord, You come and forgive!”
Forgiveness is the highest form of love. It is God’s love made available to us. By loving us, God forgives us and heals us. By giving us the commandment to love each other, He gives us the commandment to forgive each other. If we made an effort to forgive our neighbor from morning until evening, we would fall asleep with joy in God’s arms - because our bed is often His lap, His fatherly arms that lull us to sleep, that relieve our tiredness and our toil, and that help us take up our cross the following day so we can go to Him again. But only if we’ll forgive. Otherwise, if we say: “I will never forget what he said to me! I will never forget what he did to me!”, then our burden will be heavier and heavier. We will not be able to love God, our neighbor, or ourselves.
I know that God loves us the way we are. And you know it too. The way we are - we don’t have to change so that God will love us. A student asked me: “Then why should we struggle to be good?” So that we love ourselves. We are not able to love ourselves the way we are.
And I have this proof of how much parents love their children and how strongly they show their love when their children go to prison. There are good children in our prisons; there are children of good parents - they end up doing serious crimes from stupidity or a moment of inattention and go to jail. Their parents are there, at the prison’s gates; they bring their children packages as often as it is allowed; they bring their children their love. The children are the ones who cannot love themselves anymore. They are the ones who cannot rejoice for the love of their parents from beyond the bars.
We are like this too. God loves us; it is we who cannot love ourselves. That is why we need to say: “God, help me change so that I can love myself too! So I can reconcile with myself! So I can forgive myself!” Sometimes it is hard to forgive. And it is hard because of two reasons.
It is hard because the enemy opposes us. He doesn’t like it when we forgive someone, and because of this, he argues that people don’t deserve our forgiveness. But forgiveness doesn’t depend on whether the person we forgive deserves our forgiveness. Forgiveness is my work; it is my soul’s work and the power God gives me.
The other reason it is hard to forgive is that we don’t know what forgiveness is. We sometimes confuse forgiveness with excusing the other person: “He was drunk…” This is not forgiveness. This is an explanation, an excuse we find for behavior that hurt us, but we don’t dare to say: “You hurt me, and I forgive you!” Let us not start talking to that person or reconcile with that person before forgiving him.
We confuse forgiveness with reconciliation. We reconcile with each other without forgiving each other. And things pile up, and we can’t look each other in the eye truthfully anymore.
We confuse forgiveness with forgetting. “I forgot everything!” No. Forgiveness is not forgetting.
Then what is forgiveness? It is God’s mercy flowing into me, which I then give to my neighbor, or to the one who hurt me, or to myself. And we say: “Lord, You come and forgive!”
