On the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descends, human nature also steps out of the human, out of fear, into the divine, into divine serenity. The Apostles, even though they had seen and even done themselves things that were above nature, even though they were convinced of the great reality of the Resurrection from the dead, were still trembling from all the fibers of their human weakness.
The Holy Spirit, through His descent, erased fear from human nature. Human beings were given power from above through tongues of fire. From that moment on, they were not speaking from their understanding, but from the Holy Spirit. It is natural for God to speak to human beings about Himself through other human beings. But then, these beings receive divine fire and light.
The divine presence transports man into the happiness he seeks - the happiness of supreme certitude. Then, there is no power on earth that he fears, even though he poses no danger to anyone.
Only thus can we explain the miracle that 12 people, simple yet convinced by divine evidence, managed to overcome the Roman Empire through a revolution without weapons, as it had not been seen before. They went to the ends of the earth, confronting all the dangers of those times and places, gaining people to the faith in Christ, not only by their life and words, but even by their death - which is the ultimate, most powerful gesture of the victory of the spirit against the materiality of this world.
Behold the destiny of a man clothed in the Holy Spirit! Behold what a tongue of fire of the divine presence can do!
